글로벌 기업 ESG 역량 비교 연구- 퍼지셋 이상형 분석의 적용
A Study comparing the ESG capabilities of Global Companies through the Fuzzy-set ideal type analysis

본 연구는 퍼지셋 이상형 분석기법을 활용하여 ESG 역량 유형을 분류하고 유형별 특성을 파악하여 ESG 역량에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 ESG 정보 공개 수준이 높은 글로벌 기업을 연구 대상으로 하여 ‘2021년 포춘 글로벌 500’ 기업 중 20개 회사에 대해 연구를 수행하였다. 연구의 결과 ESG 역량을 8개의 유형으로 분류하였는데 대표적으로 환경(E), 사회(S), 거버넌스(G) 역량이 모두 높은 ESG(1) 유형에는 AT&T, 토탈 에너지, 쉘, 글렌코어가 속하였으며, E, S, G 역량이 모두 낮은 esg(8) 유형에는 코스트코, 맥케슨, 중국공상은행, 중국건축공사가 속하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 시간의 흐름에 따른 기업 ESG 역량 변화를 살펴보기 위해 2021년 E, S, G 점수와 2016년 결과를 비교하였는데 분석결과 2016년 esg(8) 유형에 몰려있던 기업들이 2021년에는 각 유형별로 고르게 분산되며 기업들의 전체적인 ESG 역량이 향상된 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 특히 E, S, G 역량 중 E 역량 향상이 두드러졌다. 이 연구는 '퍼지셋 이상형 분석'이라는 이론적 방법론을 기업 ESG 역량 분석에 적용해 기존보다 다차원적인 ESG 역량 분석이 가능한 새로운 방법을 제시하였으며, 기업이 ESG 역량을 상승시키기 위해 과연 어떻게 해야하는지, ESG 정책을 입안하는 정부는 어떠한 준비를 해야 하는지에 대한 시사점을 제공하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to broaden the understanding of ESG capabilities by classifying ESG capability types and identifying the characteristics of each type using the fuzzy set ideal type analysis. To this end, a study was conducted on 20 companies among the ‘2021 Fortune Global 500’ companies, targeting global companies with a high level of ESG information disclosure. As a result of the study, ESG capabilities were classified into eight types. Representatively, AT&T, Total Energy, Shell, and Glencore belonged to ESG(1) types with high environmental(E), social(S), and governance(G) capabilities; Costco, McKesson, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and China Construction Corporation belong to the esg(8) types with low E, S and G capabilities. In addition, in order to examine changes in ESG capabilities over time, an analysis was conducted with the E, S, and G scores in 2021 and the scores in 2016, and the results were compared. In 2021, it was confirmed that the overall ESG capabilities improved evenly by each type. Among E, S, and G capabilities, the improvement of E capabilities was particularly noticeable. This study presented a new model for ESG capability analysis by applying a theoretical methodology called 'fuzzy set ideal type analysis' to corporate ESG capability analysis.
