본 연구는 경부고속도로가 우리나라의 지속적인 경제성장에 미친 효과를내생적 성장이론 모형과 우리나라의 지역별 패널 통계를 활용하여 총요소생산성에 미치는 장･단기 효과를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 기여는, 경부고속도로의 활용 증대가 노동과 자본의 요소생산성 향상을 통해 우리나라의 지속가능한 경제성장을 달성케 하였다는 것을 내생적 성장이론 모형과 실증분석을통해 구체적으로 확인하였다는 것이다. 경부고속도로의 이용이 우리나라 경제성장에 영향을 미치는 메커니즘은, 본 연구의 이론 및 실증 연구 모두에서, 단기적으로 총요소생산성의 수준(level)에 대해 음(-)의 효과를 가지고 있지만, 장기적으로 그 증가율에서는 양(+)의 효과를 미치는 것으로 파악된다. 이는 고속도로 및 교통 사회 간접자본건설이 실물투자확대에 의한 경제 활성화를 가져온다는 기존의 연구 결과를 보완하는 것이다. 이러한 이론과 실증분석 결과는 향후 다양한 인프라들과 경부고속도로의 활용 및 개선 방향에많은 정책적 시사점을 제시하고 있다.
Abstract
We examine the role of Seoul-Busan Express Highway in promoting sustained economic growth in South Korea through the lens of the endogenous economic growth theory where the growth in total factor productivity (TFP) is achieved by the highway’s network effects that improve the efficiency of resource allocation and knowledge diffusion. Our model predicts that increased highway usage leads to a temporary decrease in the level of TFP, but in the long run, it enhances the rate of TFP growth. To empirically test our predictions, we utilize regional-level panel data encompassing both metropolitan and provincial areas in which we find corroborative evidence. Our finding suggests that Seoul-Busan Highway has not only provided short-term economic stimulation through transportation infrastructure investments, as highlighted in existing literature, but it has also played a crucial role in fostering long-term sustained economic growth in South Korea. Our study’s findings carry important policy implications, particularly in relation to infrastructure investment and the effective utilization of highways
