초록

As global interest in health promotion and the environment increases, bicycles and motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular as alternative modes of transportation and leisure activities. While the number of fatalities from transportation accidents has steadily decreased over the past 20 years, the number of fatalities from motorcycle, bicycle, and other two-wheeled vehicle accidents has increased compared to the previous year. This study used data from in-depth injury surveys of hospital discharges from 2011 to 2020 to identify the characteristics of hospitalized patients, factors affecting length of stay and mortality following bicycle and motorcycle accidents. Both bicycles and motorcycles showed a higher incidence among elderly males during the summer, resulting in a high frequency of head and neck injuries. Factors affecting length of stay for bicycle accidents included gender, age, severity, injured body part, and surgery. For motorcycle accidents, the factors were gender, age, season, injured body part, and surgery. Factors affecting mortality for bicycle accidents were age, injured body part, and surgery, while those for motorcycle accidents were age, severity, injured body part, and surgery. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the characteristics of hospitalized patients for each group in order to establish appropriate response measures and policies to prevent accidents and utilize medical resources efficiently.
