한국의 쿳시 소설 연구에 대한 일고찰 – 『포』에 대한 연구를 중심으로

이 글은 한국에서 아프리카 소설을 어떻게 연구하고 있는지 살펴보는 작업의 일환으로, 『로빈슨 크루소』를 ‘다시 쓰기’한 쿳시의 『포』에 대한 연구들을 일별해 본 것이다. 논의들은 주요 등장인물이 어떻게 다르게 형상화되고 있는지를 살펴보는 것에 집중되어 있다. 『포』에는 크루소가 개척자나 구원자가 아니라는 것이 분명하게 드러나는 반면, 프라이데이가 어떤 존재인지는 감추어져 있음이 지적된다. 그러면서도 혀가 잘린 모습으로 백인들의 잔혹성을 드러내며, 저항적 모습을 보여준다고 해석한다. 한편 원전에는 없는 새로운 여성 서술자 수잔과 마지막 장에 누군지 ‘알 수 없는 화자’가 등장하는데, 수잔이 프라이데이의 진실에 도달하지 못하는 것과 알 수 없는 화자의 서술이 의미하는 것에 대한 적극적 논의가 부족하다. 『포』에 대한 논의는 주로 탈식민주의와 연관되어 있다. 그러나 정전을 다시 쓴다고 탈식민주의가 구현되는 것은 아니므로, 탈식민주의의 여러 개념과 전략에 대한 면밀한 논의가 필요하다. 특히나 아프리카의 백인이라는 이중적 정체성/공모성을 지닌 작가가 구사하는 탈식민주의 전략과 남아공이라는 특수성과 연관된 논의도 필요하다.
Abstract
This article examines how African novels are being researched in Korea by analyzing the theses on Coetzee's novel “Foe”, which is a 're-write' of “Robinson Crusoe”. Discussions in Korea are focused on examining how the main characters are shaped differently. According to those discussions, it is clearly revealed that Cruso is not a pioneer or a savior, but It is not clear what Friday is in “Foe”. Friday's severed tongue shows the brutality of white people. And Friday He is a resistant character. The studies published so far lack the following; There is little research on the new female narrator Susan and the 'unknown speaker' in the last chapter. The discussion on “Foe” is mainly related to post-colonialism. We need to work closely on various concepts and strategies of post-colonialism. Because postcolonialism is not realized by writing-back Cannon immediately. In particular, in the future, we should study the post-colonial strategy used by white African writers-with dual identity/collusion- and the specificity of South Africa.
