The Effect on the Internationalization and Performance Relationship of Subcontracting SMEs: A Moderating Effect of Small and Large Business Relationship

This study is to analyze the moderating effect of subcontracting business in the relationship between the level of internationalization and performance of SMEs. Since SMEs account for a very large portion of the Korean economy, the internationalization of SMEs is an important research topic to secure the international competitiveness of SMEs. However, in the existing studies on the internationalization of SMEs, there are still insufficient studies that accurately limited only SMEs, and most of them are analysis without consideration of subcontracting business, a major business type of SMEs. As a result of the analysis, the effect of internationalization on the performance of SMEs was derived differently depending on whether the customer was a large company or a SMEs. In other words, it was found that subcontracting business with large firm had a positive effect on internationalization and performance, while businesses with SMEs had a negative effect. This result provides implications for a subcontracting business as a strategic means highly utilized for SMEs growth as a complementary asset to supplement the resources insufficient for SMEs.
