Performance Analysis of a Maize Harvester Detach-System Using Discrete Element Method (DEM)

This study aimed to develop a discrete element model for edible maize to replace factorial experiments with computer simulations. We also performed factorial experiment simulations for the detach-system using the developed model. When the maize stalk was detached, we measured the physical properties of edible maize and the maximum load from the push-pull gauge test. The variables necessary to develop a discrete model of edible maize were determined through parametric studies, and the developed model was validated by comparing it with the physical and mechanical properties of maize. We also performed a simulation analysis on the detach-system using a dynamic simulation model that can evaluate the detaching rate according to the cylinder angle of the detach part. Our results showed that the detaching rate of maize varies depending on the cylinder angle. Furthermore, simulations identified a cylinder angle of 65° or less as ideal with an excellent detaching rate.
