ESG시대 교회의 지속가능성과 선교적 구조로의 전환

In the post-COVID-19 era, many global companies have paid increasing attention to the sustainability of their corporate management. In the midst of crises such as the global pandemic and climate change, the companies attempt to consider “Environmental, Social, and Governance” (ESG) as important criteria and directions for corporate survival. For churches, which are also in the midst of quantitative and qualitative crises, the shift to ESG by the corporations provides important insights into the meaning and practice of their sustainability. This paper presents an empirical discussion of sustainable church in the ESG era. Within the framework of a missional ecclesiology that emphasizes the social responsibility and public values of church, it discusses how ESG concepts can contribute to the ecological transition of the church structure. In particular, the framework of “Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation” (JPIC), which has been influential in the formation of ecumenical ecclesiology, is explored in relation to ESG in order to provide new directions and alternatives for the missionary and pastoral transformation of the church. This study will therefore investigate the development of the ESG concept, its inter-connectedness with the JPIC framework, and the missionary implications of the JPIC-ESG-based transformation of church structures. In addition, some examples of missional church which are motivated by JPIC-ESG will be discussed. In doing so, we will explore ways to enhance the viability of churches in the post-Christendom era and improve their credibility in the public sphere.
