The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between subjective well-being and depression in the elderly living in a local city. The subjects of the survey were 258 elderly, and data collection was conducted through interviews using self-administered questionnaires during the period May 1 to June 30, 2023. The results of verifying the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between subjective well-being and depression in the surveyed elderly revealed that the lower the subjective well-being, the lower the social support, and the higher the depression. The effect of social support on depression while controlling subjective well-being was statistically significant. At this time, the β value of subjective well-being was -0.418, which was smaller than the β value of -0.623, which was not passed through the parameter , indicating that social support had a mediating effect. In the results of the Sobel test, social support played a partial mediating role in the relationship between subjective well-being and depression. The above results suggest that social support for the elderly may have a mediating effect on enhancing subjective well-being related to depression in the elderly.
