본 연구는 유가충격이 경제활동에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 경제의 확장기와 수축기에 따라 유가충격 효과가 다르게 나타날 수 있는 비대칭 효과를 살펴보기 위해 2-상태 마코브 국면전환 모형이 이용되었다. 유가 변동성 확대를 고려하여 일반화 자기회귀 조건부 이분산(GARCH: generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity) 모형을 통해 추정된 조건부 분산과 다양한 유가충격 변수들의 효과를 비교함으로써 추정 결과의 강건성을 높였다. 분석 결과 GARCH(1,1) 모형은 유가 변동성을 적절하게 설명하고, 유가 변동성은 다른 유가충격 변수처럼 경제성장률에 유의한 음의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 양의 유가 변동과 음의 유가변동을 구분하여 국면별 유가충격 효과의 비대칭성을 살펴본 결과 경기 수축기에 양의 유가 충격만 경제성장률에 부정적 영향을 미치고, 경기 확장기에 유가 변동은 경제성장률에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과로 볼 때 유가상승충격의 효과는 경제의 상태에 따라 비대칭적이고 마코브 국면전환 모형은 이를 적절하게 설명하는 것으로 판단된다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of oil price shocks on economic activities. A two-state Markov phase-switching model was used to examine the asymmetry effects according to the different phase of business cycle. Considering the recent expansion of oil price volatility, the estimated conditional variance through the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model was used as oil price shock variables. For the robust check the results were compared with other oil price shocks. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the GARCH(1, 1) model adequately explained oil price volatility, and oil price volatility, like other oil price shock variables, had a significant negative effect on the economic growth rate. Only positive oil price shocks have a negative effect on real GDP growth rate during economic contraction, while oil price shocks do not have a significant effect on economic growth rate during economic expansion. In view of these results, it is judged that the shock of rising oil prices is closely related to the contraction of economic activity in Korea and is adequately explained by the Markov regime switch model.
