월터 크레인이 1886년 발표한 『어린이 이솝 우화』는 어린이를 위한 그림 동화책이다. 원래『이솝 우화』는 고대 그리스의 아이소포스의 우화들을 모아 놓은 교훈 문학 작품이다. 냉혹한 현실 세계와 사회를 풍자하고 도덕적 교훈을 주는 이 이야기들을 윌리엄 린턴이 운율로 각색했고, 그 원고를 토대로 크레인이 개정하고 삽화를 그려 넣어 제작했다. 헬라어 원전과 달리 66편의 이야기만 선별해 짧게 압축하고, 각 우화의 끝부분에는 간단한 교훈적 메시지를 첨가하는 형식을 취하고 있다. 우화가 지닌 메시지, 동식물의 의인화와 비현실적 설정 등은 평소 크레인의 사회주의적 이념이나 그림의 성격과 잘 맞아떨어졌고, 당시 전성기를 구가하던 크레인의 세련된 드로잉을 통해 수준 높은 그림책이 완성될 수 있었다. 『어린이 이솝 우화』는『어린이 오페라』와 『어린이 부케』의 후속 연작으로 기획, 제작되었다. 책의 장르나 성격 면에서는 공통점이 없지만, 정사각형 포맷과 일정한 규칙성 안에서 페이지 디자인이 배열되는 편집디자인의 기본 형식은 전작들과 같다. 그러나 레이아웃의 구성은 독특하고 색채 사용과 재현은 더욱 섬세해졌다. 특히 짧은 이야기를 토대로 한 다채로운 상상력과 이미지, 풍부한 뉘앙스의 유려한 드로잉, 고대 그리스라는 콘셉트의 강조, 내용과 메시지에 어울리는 화면 구도와 장식성, 주요 모티브와 디테일의 장식적 혼합 등이 매우 세련된 조형감각을 보여준다. 본고는 이 책의 제작 배경, 포맷 및 형식, 레이아웃, 색채 인쇄, 그리고 드로잉의 표현양식이라는 여러 관점에서 분석함으로써, 크레인의 작품은 물론 근대 그림책의 역사에서 그것이 갖는 의미를 부각하고자 시도되었다.
Abstract
『The Baby's Own Aesop』 published by Walter Crane in 1886 is a picture tale book for children. Originally, 『Aesop's Fable』 is the didactic literature, which collected fables of the ancient Greek writer Αἴσωπος. These stories, which satirize the harsh real world and society and provide moral lessons, were adapted into rhythms by W. J. Linton, and then Crane changed their details based on the manuscript and added illustration to the stories. This book briefly summarizes only 66 stories unlike the Greek original script, and includes a simple didactic message at the end of each fable. Messages given by the fables, personification of animals and plants, and unrealistic situations harmonize with Crane's own socialist ideology or styles of paintings and his sophisticated drawing enjoying the golden age at that time helped make the high-level picture book. 『The Baby’s Own Aesop』 was planned and produced as the subsequent series of 『The Baby's Opera』 and 『The Baby's Bouquet』. Although the book had nothing in common with the previous works with regard to the genre or character, the basic format of its editorial design, in which the page design is arranged in the boundary of the square format and certain regularity, is also the same as the previous works. However, the composition of its layout is unique, and the use and representation of color has become more delicate. It contains various imagination and images based on short stories, elegant drawing of a rich nuance, emphasis on the concept of ancient Greece, decorative mixture of main motives and details show very sophisticated sense of formation. This thesis is aimed at shedding a light on Crane’s works and their significance in the history of modern picture books by analyzing their manufacturing background, format, forms, layout, color printing and drawing expression style, etc.
