Observational Research-Based Study on Senior Furniture Design: Analysis of Usage and Needs

As China enters an aging society, the elderly care industry, ranging from products to services, has garnered significant societal attention. Furniture plays a direct role in the comfort of living for seniors, who, due to the decline in physical function and differences in lifestyle, have specific needs for furniture. This paper highlights the advantages of using observational research methods for senior furniture design studies. It details the process of implementing in-home observational research to directly uncover the real needs of users in their natural environments with furniture. The POSTA framework model is established, integrating quantitative empirical data and in-depth interview analysis recorded by Observer XT. This approach comprehensively understands the intricate relationships between users, objects, and their environment. By providing an integrated insight into the behaviors and underlying needs of senior users, this study proposes future directions for senior furniture research. These insights guide the functional design of furniture products, enhancing the user experience for seniors and aiding in the development of seniors furniture market.
