국내기업 ESG경영에 있어서 산림탄소흡수원의 활용과 향후 과제
Utilization and Challenges of Forest Carbon Sinks in the ESG Management of Korean Companies

기후변화에 따라 기업의 환경적 책임을 강조하고 구체화시키는 ESG 경영은 기업에게 많은 변화와 책임을 요구하며 확산되고 있다. 이에 따라 산림탄소흡수원은 기업의 온실가스배출 상쇄 수단으로 뿐만 아니라 생태계의 유지 및 복원의 대상으로 주목받으며 활용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국거래소(Korea Exchange, KRX)에 공시(2023년 4월 기준)되어 있는 KCGS 평가 등급 A이상, 76개 기업의 ESG 경영보고서를 대상으로 국내기업들의 산림탄소흡수원 유지 및 증진 활동과 관련된 활동들을 분석하였다. 결과에따르면 활동 내용이 있는 기업은 21개로 조사 대상의 27.6%이며 규모 및 내용에 있어서는 큰 차이를 보이고 있다. 향후 국내기업들의 산림탄소흡수원의 유지 및 증진을 강화하기 위해서는 기업 스스로 사업을 개발하며 추진할 수 있는 능력 배양과 함께 이를 제도적으로 지원할 수 있는 기반이 마련되어야 한다. 또한ESG 경영과 밀접한 관련이 있는 한국형 녹색분류체계(K-Taxonomy)에서의 산림탄소흡수원 유지 및 증진 활동은 현재보다 광범위하고 구체적인 내용으로 보완되어야 한다.
Abstract
The ESG management, which emphasizes corporate environmental responsibility due to climate change, requires many changes and responsibilities from companies. Accordingly, the forest carbon sinks are attracting attention as a very important resource not only for the offsetting greenhouse gas emissions but also for ecosystem conservation and restoration. This study analyzed the activities related to the conservation and enhancement of forest carbon sinks in the ESG management reports of 76 companies with a KCGS rating of A or higher that were publicly disclosed on the Korea Exchange (KRX) as of April 2023. As a result of the analysis, 21 (27.6%) of the surveyed companies are engaged in forest carbon sink activities, which vary widely in scope and content. In order to expand the activities of Korean companies in the future, the institutional support is needed to enhance the ability of companies to implement their own projects. In addition, the Korean Green Taxonomy needs to be supplemented with more comprehensive and detailed content on forest carbon sink conservation and promotion activities.
