교단 헌법을 통한 웨슬리안 전통의 수용과 전파 — 미국 감리교회와 만국성결교회 그리고 한국성결교회를 중심으로

본고는 교단 헌법 또는 『매뉴얼』이나 『교리와 장정』을 통해 웨슬리안 전통을 보존하는 경향이 미국과 한국의 웨슬리안 그룹들에 있었음을 보여주고자 한다. 미국의 만국사도성결교회(현, 웨슬리안교회)는 1914년부터 미국 감리교의 『교리와 장정』에서 웨슬리안 전통 중 네 가지를 차용하여 자신들의 『매뉴얼』에 포함시켰다. 또한, 동양선교회 선교사들은 만국사도성결교회 『매뉴얼』 (1916)을 참조하여 한국성결교회 『교리급조례』(1925)를 편찬하였고, 웨슬리안 전통 중 세 요소를 그 안에 포함시켰다. 여기서 말하는 웨슬리안 전통은 (1) 종교강령, (2) 예전 양식, (3) 조력자를 위한 규칙, (4) 목사안수 연구과정 속 존 웨슬리의 저술이다. 이것이 웨슬리안 전통인 이유는 그가 직접 편집하거나 저술한 것들이기 때문이다. 첫 두 요소는 잉글랜드 국교회에서 기원하여 미국 감리교를 위해 준비된 것이고, 셋째 요소는 영국 감리회를 위해 오랫동안 활용되던 것이었다. 마지막 요소는 미국 감리교의 고유한 제도를 통해 웨슬리의 글이 권장되고 읽혀지던 현상과 관련된다. 본 연구를 통해 미국의 감리교회와 성결교회, 그리고 한국의 성결교회가 웨슬리안 전통을 매개로 연결된다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 성결교회 그룹들이 기존의 전통을 수용할 때 자신들의 신학(사중복음) 및 상황에 따라 본문을 개정했다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This article argues that Wesleyan holiness groups, across denominations and nations, tended to preserve Wesleyan traditions by producing their Book of Discipline and Worship. The International Apostolic Holiness (IAH) Church (now the Wesleyan Church) adopted four elements of the Wesleyan tradition from Methodist’s Doctrines and Discipline and inserted them into their Manual: (1) the Articles of Religion, (2) the Forms of Ritual (3) the Rules of a Helper, and (4) Wesley’s Writings in the Course of Study. Indeed, in 1925, the Oriental Missionary Society (OMS), founded and operated by IAH Church members, adopted these Wesleyan traditions by imitating the IAH Church’s Manual (1916) to create the OMS Holiness Church of Korea’s The Doctrines and Discipline (1925). While three traditions were derived from John Wesley in relation to the Church of England, one element was a product of American Methodism. But, the IAH Church amended the above traditions in terms of the Four-fold Gospel. Consequently, connecting to deeply rooted Christian heritage, this article will bring about a more profound understanding of the holiness churches in the United States and Korea.
