ESG와 기업통제가 기업가치에 미치는 영향: 중국 A 주식시장을 중심으로
The Impact of ESG and Corporate Control on Corporate Value: A Focus on the Chinese A－Share Market

[연구목적]본 연구는 세계 최대 실물 및 자본시장 중 하나인 중국시장을 중심으로 기업의 ESG 활동이 기업가치를 증가시킬 수 있는지, 그리고 기업의 내부통제와 외부통제가 ESG 활동과 기업가치 간의 관계를 강화할 수 있는지 알아보는 데 그 목적이 있다. [연구방법]2012년부터 2022년까지 중국 A 주식시장 상장사 중에서 금융업종 및 위기 기업을 제외하고 28,623개의 기업 연도(firm－year) 관측치로 구성된 비평형 패널 데이터를 활용, 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 종속변수는 Tobin’s q를 활용하였고, 독립변수는 중국 ESG 평가기관인 화증(华证)의 ESG 등급 자료, DiBo 내부통제 지수, 기관투자자 지분율 등을 활용하였다. [연구결과]실증분석 결과, 중국 기업의 ESG는 기업가치에 유의한 양(＋)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, ESG의 세부 요인 중 S(사회)요인과 G(지배구조)요인은 기업가치에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 내부통제 및 외부통제 모두 ESG와 기업가치 간의 관계를 긍정적으로 조절하는 것으로 나타났다. [연구의 시사점]본 연구는 선진 자본시장과 비교하여 ESG 경영의 중요성이 상대적으로 높지 않은 중국 시장에서도 ESG 활동이 기업가치 극대화에 중요한 요소임을 확인할 수 있다는 데에 의의가 있으며, 중국 기업을 대상으로 지속 가능한 발전과 환경보존 및 사회적 책임에 대한 중요성이 증가하는 상황에서 경영진 및 투자자 그리고 정책 입안자에게 실질적인 시사점을 제공할 것으로 기대할 수 있다.
Abstract
[Purpose]This study aims to examine whether corporate ESG activities can enhance corporate value, with a focus on the Chinese market. Additionally, the study seeks to investigate whether internal and external controls of a company can strengthen the relationship between ESG activities and corporate value. [Methodology]To test hypotheses, regression analyses were conducted using panel data from the China A－share stock market. The dependent variable is Tobin’s q, and the independent variables include Chinese ESG ratings(HuaZheng 华证), the internal control index from DiBo, and the percentage of institutional investor ownership [Findings]It was found that ESG activities of Chinese companies have a statistically significant positive (＋) impact on corporate value. Furthermore, both internal and external controls were observed to positively moderate the relationship between ESG activities and corporate value. [Implications]The significance of this study lies in confirming that, ESG activities play a crucial role in maximizing corporate value. As the importance of sustainable development, environmental conservation, and social responsibility increases for Chinese companies, this research is expected to provide practical implications for management, investors, and policymakers.
