초록
테슬라는 자동차 시장의 신규 진입자로 자사의 핵심 비즈니스인 EV를 성공적으로 이끌어 산업 및 학계의 주목을 받았다. 본 연구는 테슬라의 EV 시장 내 성공을 생태계 관점에서 논하고자 특허 자료를 바탕으로 테슬라 EV 비즈니스 생태계를 분석하였다. 추출된 전⋅후방 인용 특허를 통해 특허 네트워크 분석을 실시한 결과, 테슬라 EV 비즈니스 생태계는 크게 EV, 에너지, IT, 인프라 네 개 영역으로 구성되어 있었다. 특허 네트워크 분석 결과, 테슬라는 자동차 시장에서경쟁하기 위해 핵심 비즈니스인 EV를 중심으로 견고한 EV 비즈니스 생태계를 구축하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 핵심 비즈니스인 EV 관련 기술을 확보하고 자사가 보유한 기술 역량을 바탕으로 에너지, IT 등 관련 분야로 사업 확장을꾀하는 모습을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 테슬라의 성공을 조명한 선행연구들과 달리 특허 데이터를 바탕으로 테슬라 생태계의 구조적 특성과 전략적 특성을 논했다는 점에서 차별화 된다. 특히 특허 인용 정보 분석에 그치지 않고 주요사업 영역과 세부 사업 분야로 논의를 확장하여 하나의 전략으로서 테슬라의 EV 비즈니스 생태계를 보다 종합적인 시각에서 논하였다.
Abstract
Tesla, as a newcomer to the automobile market, has successfully led its core business of Electric Vehicles (EVs), gathering attention from the industry and academia. This study aims to discuss Tesla's EV market success from an ecosystem perspective, analyzing Tesla's EV business ecosystem based on patent data. Through the analysis of extracted forward and backward citations, the patent network analysis revealed that Tesla's EV business ecosystem consists of four main domains: EV, energy, IT, and infrastructure. The patent network analysis results indicate that Tesla is building a robust EV business ecosystem with a focus on EVs as its core business to compete in the automotive market. Particularly, it was observed that Tesla is securing essential EV-related technologies and expanding its business into areas like energy and IT, leveraging its technological capabilities. Unlike previous studies that shed light on Tesla's success, this study stands out by employing patent data to discuss the structural and strategic attributes of Tesla's EV business ecosystem. Moreover, it goes beyond patent citation analysis by extending the discussion to key business areas and specific business segments, providing a comprehensive insight of Tesla's EV business ecosystem as a strategic tool.
