Despite the growing significance of technology and innovation within the financial industry, empirical research on the actual impact of financial innovation is notably lacking, attributed to challenges in measurement and data scarcity. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing the content of technological developments and innovations in the Korean banking industry. Patent activities are set as proxies for innovation, and the impact of financial innovation on profitability is examined. Financial data from 20 Korean banks spanning from 2012 to 2021, along with 1,308 patent applications submitted to the patent office by these banks, were collected. Panel analysis was employed to elucidate the relationship between patents and profitability. The results indicate that patent activities and their performance do not significantly influence Return on Assets (ROA). However, a statistically significant impact on Return on Equity (ROE) was observed, particularly with notable statistical significance in activity performance. This study holds significance in clarifying the relationship between technology and profitability in the Korean banking industry, spanning from the inception of widespread IT adoption to the recent prominence of fintech within the sector.
