초록
[연구목적]본 연구의 목적은 기업의 재무적 제약이 ESG 평가등급에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 검증하는 것이다. 재무적 제약하에서 기업은 ESG활동을 소극적으로 수행할 수 도 있지만, ESG등급을 기회주의적으로 이용하기 위해 적극적 ESG활동을 수행할 수도 있기 때문이다. [연구방법]한국기업지배구조원에서 발표한 ESG 평가등급의 자료를 활용하여 2013년부터 2022년까지 총 7,849개 기업－연도(이 중 재무적 곤경에 처한 기업은 1,165개)를 대상으로 분석한다. [연구결과]실증분석 결과, 기업의 재무적 제약이 클수록 ESG 평가등급은 낮아진다. 추가분석 결과도 대체로 재무적 제약과 ESG 평가등급 간 음(－)의 상관을 일관적으로 나타내었다. [정책적 시사점]본 연구의 분석 결과 재무적 제약은 ESG 평가등급에 부정적인 영향을 미치는데 이는 재무적 제약에 처한 기업이 ESG를 기회주의적으로 활용하지 않음을 시사한다. 또한 본 연구는 재무적 제약이 비재무적 가치인 ESG 평가등급과의 관련성을 제시하였다는데 의미가 있다.
Abstract
[Purpose]The purpose of this study is to verify how a company’s financial constraints affect its ESG rating. Under financial constraints, firms may be passively engaged in ESG activities, but active ESG activities can also be carried out in order to opportunistically use the ESG rating. [Methodology]A total of 7,849 companies-years from 2013 to 2022 (1,165 of them in financial distress) are analyzed using data from ESG ratings released by the Korea Corporate Governance Service (KCGS). [Findings]As a result of empirical analysis, it was found that the greater the financial constraints of a company, the lower the ESG rating. Additional analysis results also almost consistently showed a negative(－) correlation between financial constraints and ESG ratings. [PolicyImplications]As a result of the analysis of this study, financial constraints negatively affect ESG ratings, suggesting that companies under financial constraints do not use ESG opportunistically. In addition, this study is meaningful in that it presents a relationship with ESG evaluation ratings, where financial constraints are non－financial values.
