창세기에 나타난 세금의 의미에 대한 고찰: 성경 속의 세법

초록
성경 속의 세법에 대한 연구는 많지 않다. 현대적인 세금 개념을 엄격하게 지킨다면 세법과 성경의 연결고리를 찾기 어렵기 때문이다. 세법과 성경을 연결하기 위해서는 현대적인 세금의 조건을 완화할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 현대적인 세금의 조건을 완화한 다음, 창세기에서 그 조건에 부합하는 일화를 찾았다. 그 결과 아브라함, 야곱, 요셉의 이야기에 등장하는 세금을 종교세, 방위세, 구빈세로 분류했다. 창세기에 나타난 세금의 의미를 고찰한 결과 몇 가지 시사점을 찾을 수 있었다. 첫째, 종교인도 방위와 복지라는 점에서 국가의 수혜를 입고 있으므로 세금을 내는 것이 타당하다. 둘째, 종교가 사회의 통합과 발전에 기여하는 것에 상응하여 세제혜택을 부여하는 방안을 생각해볼 수 있다. 셋째, 구빈과 복지를 위한 재원을 마련해야 한다. 넷째, 서로 양보하고 상생하는 마음을 바탕으로 해결책을 찾아야 한다. 성경과 세법의 관계에 대한 후속 연구를 통해 세법에 대한 개선방향을 찾을 수 있기를 기대한다.
Abstract
There is limited scholarly research on issues related to tax law in the Bible due to the challenge of aligning modern tax concepts with biblical texts. To establish a connection between tax law and the Bible, it is necessary to alleviate modern tax conditions. In this study, the parameters of modern taxation was relaxed and these adjusted criteria were applied to relevant episodes in the book of Genesis. Consequently, taxes mentioned in the narratives of Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph were categorized as religious, defense, and welfare taxes, respectively. Through an analysis of the significance of taxes in Genesis, several implications emerged. Firstly, it is justifiable to tax religious individuals as they benefit from state services such as military defense and welfare. Secondly, the fact that religion can foster social cohesion and progress, may act as rationale for providing incentives to religious individuals. Thirdly, strategies to raise financial resources for the disadvantaged and welfare programs are imperative. Lastly, solutions based on mutual compromise and coexistence must be pursued. Further research into the relationship between the Bible and modern tax law may enhance our understanding and potentially improve tax legislation.
