초록
(연구배경 및 목적) 본 연구는 박물관의 사회적 역할과 포용적 가치 실현을 위해 박물관의 유니버설 디자인 정책을 마련하는데 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 그동안 유니버설 디자인은 모두를 포괄하는 디자인을 지칭하는 말로 건축학에서 비롯된 개념이다. 다양한 특성을 가진 이용자의 욕구를 충족시킬 수 있는 디자인이다. 최근 박물관학에서 사용 되고 있는 의미로는 그동안 박물관 관람이 자유롭지 않은 문화 소외계층을 포함하는 전시 디자인을 말한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 국내 박물관의 효과적인 유니버설 디자인 개발을 위한 배경과 방안 마련을 위해 구체적인 분석을 하고 그 가능성을 마련하는데 도움이 되고자 한다. (연구방법) 이를 위해 박물관이 만들어지기 시작한 때부터 과거의 박물관, 현재의 박물관, 미래의 박물관으로 분류하여 박물관의 가치와 의미 변화를 알아보고자 한다. 그 중 박물관의 포용성과 평등성 가치에 초점을 맞춰 근대 이후의 박물관 관람객이 느끼는 의미와 제도적 평등의 의미를 구별하여 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 이 평등의 의미가 적용되지 못했던 박물관 문화 소외계층의 유형에는 어떤 종류가 있는지 그 범위를 재분류 하고자 한다. 또한 모두를 포함하는 유니버설 디자인의 개념과 형성 배경을 다시금 정리하여 정의하였다. 이러한 유니버설 디자인 개념이 박물관에 어떤 의미로 적용 되었는지 살펴보고자 했다. 국내 주요 국립박물관인 국립고궁박물관, 국립중앙박물관, 국립현대미술관 세 곳의 예를 들어 유니버설 디자인 적용 현황을 알아보았다. 국내 주요 박물관에서는 유니버설 디자인이 아닌 베리어프리 디자인이 적용되었음을 알 수 있었다. 베리어프리 디자인은 장애가 있는 사람들의 불편함을 처음부터 고려한 디자인으로 국내 박물관은 장애를 미리 고려한 디자인이 마련되어 있었다. (결과) 본 연구를 통해 기존의 국내 박물관의 유니버설 디자인은 베리어프리와의 구별 없이 적용된 디자인으로 또 다른 차별을 갖고 올 수 있는 환경을 제시하고 있다. 그렇기에 박물관의 유니버설 디자인 적용을 적극적으로 요구하였다. 또한 국내 박물관이 기존의 문제점을 해결하여 적절한 유니버설 디자인 정책을 마련할 가능성을 찾고자 하였다. 유니버설 디자인의 개념과 형성배경 그리고 국내 박물관의 유니버설 디자인 적용 현황을 통해 아직까지 정책 정립되지 않은 국내 박물관을 위한 유니버설 디자인 개발의 가능성과 방향을 찾아보았다. (결론) 본 연구는 앞으로의 국내 박물관이 문화 중추 기관이 될 수 있도록 유니버설 디자인의 적극적인 도입과 개발의 긍정적 효과를 알아본다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
Abstract
(Background and Purpose) This study aims to provide direction for museums to establish policies for universal design to realize their social role and inclusive values. Universal design is a concept that originated from architecture and refers to design that is inclusive of all people, and designed to meet varied user needs. In recent years, it has been used in museology to refer to exhibition design that includes culturally vulnerable groups who cannot freely visit museums. This study aims to provide a detailed analysis and help prepare the background and possibility of preparing a plan for the development of effective universal design in domestic museums. (Method) The value and meaning of museums will be categorized into past, present, and future museums, discussing the changes since the concept of the museum was created. In this context, the focus is on the value of inclusivity and equality in museums, distinguishing between the subjective experience of museum visitors in modernity and the institutional concept of equality. Furthermore, this study attempts to reclassify the range of the scope for vulnerable groups who do not apply this meaning of equality. The inclusive concept of universal design is redefined, the background to its creation is examined, and the application of universal design concepts in museums is investigated. The status of universal design application was investigated using three major national museums – the National Palace Museum, the National Museum of Korea, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. It was found that barrier-free design, rather than universal design, has been applied to these museums. The barrier-free design takes into account the inconvenience of people with disabilities, and the museums, which is an interest of this study, consider barrier-free designs from the beginning. (Results) According to this study, the universal design applied in national museums has less distinction from barrier-free design, presenting an environment with other forms of discrimination for vulnerable museum visitors. Therefore, this study applies appropriate universal design to museums while exploring the possibilities for national museums to solve existing problems. This study explores the potential and direction of developing universal design policies for national museums by examining the concept, background, and current application of universal design. (Conclusions) This study is significant as it examines the positive effects of actively introducing and developing the universal design, aiming to enable national museums to have an important role in culture.
