초록
본 연구는 보험회사의 배당정책에 지배구조와 회계정보의 질이 미치는 영향에 대하여 실증분석하였다. 분석결과, 최대주주지분율과 외국인지분율이 높을수록 배당성향과 배당수익률이 유의하게 높게 나타나고 있음을 발견하였다. 또한 재량적발생액으로 측정한 회계정보의 질이 우수할수록 배당정책에도 영향을 미치나, 통계적 유의성은 높지 않았다. 본 연구는 보험회사의 배당정책에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 지배구조와 회계정보의 질을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 보험회사의 배당정책에 주주들의 배당요구가 유의하게 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여준다. 또한, 최대주주지분율보다는 외국인지분율의 높은 유의성은 최근 높아지고 있는 기관투자자들의 영향이 보험산업에도 중요해지고 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구의 결과는 보험회사의 배당정책뿐만 아니라 투자의사결정과 관련된 후속연구에도 유용하게 활용될 수 있으며, 나아가 보험회사의 가치평가와 감독 및 회계유관기관의 담당자들에게도 유용한 실증분석결과를 제시함으로써 국내 보험산업의 지속가능성과 ESG관련 공시정보에 중요한 시사점을 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
This paper empirically examines the effect of governance and accounting quality on a firm dividend payout policy in the insurance industry. Specific ally, we explore whether a firm with high large shareholders’ rights and foreign shareholders’ rights is more likely to have higher dividend payout ratio, In addition to governance, we test whether the effect of accounting quality measured by the absolute value of discretionary accruals and standard deviation of discretionary accruals affects dividend policy of a firm. Based on prior studies, we expect the positive effect of governance and accounting quality on a firm’s dividend policy. Using 271 insurance firm-year observa tions from 2003 to 2021, we find that the firms with high foreign share holders’ rights are more likely to pay dividends. However, the relationship between firms with high accounting quality and dividend payout is partly significant. It implies that firms tend to decide dividend policy based on shareholders’ demand rather than the level of accounting quality. Our study contributes to better understanding of insurer’s dividend policy and the effect of corporate governance on dividend payout policy.
