기후변화는 자연 생태계를 변화시키고 인간사회를 위협하는 요인임에도 불구하고, 기후변화에 따른 인간의 건강위험에 대한 연구는 아직 미진하며, 이에 대한 실증적 연구는 매우 부족하다. 따라서 본 연구는 기후변화에 따른 건강위험의 변화를 실증적으로 살펴보기 위해 계획되었다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 2004년부터 2022년까지 기후변화의 대리변수로 평균 온도, 폭염 일수, 한파 일수 그리고 건강위험 대리변수로 한국표준질병사인분류(KCD) 대분류에 따른 11가지 질병의 진료현황 즉, 입내원일수, 진료비를 대리변수로 그랜저 인과성 검정(Granger Causality Test)과 벡터자기회귀(Vector Autoregression) 모형 분석을 진행하였다. 연구결과 기후변화는 건강위험에 통계적으로 유의미한 그랜저 인과관계를 확인하였다. 따라서 기후변화는 인간의 건강위험 변화에 선행성이 있으며, 기후변화는 건강위험을 예측하는데 있어 통계적으로 유의한 요인임과 동시에 기후변화는 건강위험을 높이는 인과성 있다는 것을 시사한다. 본 연구는 기후변화와 건강위험에 대해 실증적으로 살펴봄으로써 부족한 관련연구를 촉진하는 학문적 의의를 지니며, 기후변화에 따른 건강위험 대비책 마련의 근거를 제공하는 실무적 의의를 갖는다. 하지만 본 연구의 방법론은 건강위험에 미치는 다양한 영향요인을 고려하지 못하였다는 것에 한계가 있다.
Abstract
Climate change appears to have significant implications for human health, yet there is a glaring lack of empirical research in this area. Therefore, this study was designed to empirically examine the health risks associated with climate change. From 2004 to 2022, this study conducted Granger causality analysis and VAR analysis using climate change proxy variables, including average temperature, number of heatwave days, and number of cold wave days, as well as health risk proxy variables, which comprised 11 diseases classified under the KCD-22 system, focusing on hospitalization days and medical expenses. The analysis revealed statistically significant positive Granger causality between average temperature, number of heatwave days, number of cold wave days, and hospitalization days along with medical expenses for many diseases. Thus, the findings of this study suggest that climate change precedes health risks and has a causal relationship with them. While this study serves the academic purpose of promoting research on climate change and health risks, it has limitations in not considering all factors that influence both climate change and health risks.
