초록
일부 비평가들의 지적과는 달리「법률가의 이야기」는 14세기 영국의 종교적 전통과 초서만의 문학적 기법의 조화를 통하여 종교적 믿음과 신앙심을 독자에게 전달하기 위한 초서의 대표적 종교시에 해당한다. 초서는 인간의 능력으로는 파악할 수 없는 ‘신의 섭리,’ ‘죄 없는 인간에게 신이 부여하는 고통’ 그리고 이에 대한 ‘신앙인의 자세’와 같은 종교적 가르침을 당시 독자들에게 더욱 쉽게 전달할 의도에서「법률가의 이야기」를 기획하였다고 보인다. 초서는 당시 독자들에게 익숙한 종교적 전통과 독특한 문학적 기법을 통하여 원전인 트리벳의 연대기를 ‘다시 이야기’(re-telling)하고 있다. 무엇보다 독자와 신의 세계 사이의 간격을 줄이며 독자의 마음속에서 종교적 믿음을 끌어내기 위하여 초서는 독자의 마음속에 페이소스를 불러일으키는 장치와 장면들을 작품에서 사용하고 있다. 원전에 나오는 주인공의 모습과는 달리 초서는 동정과 연민을 불러일으키는 이미지로 콘스탄스를 묘사하고 있다. 아무런 죄 없이 신이 부여한 시련을 말없이 눈물과 기도로써 감내하는 성모 마리아의 이미지를 연상시키는 콘스탄스의 이미지는 당시 독자들에게는 매우 익숙하게 다가왔을 것이다. 이 밖에도 초서는 기적 관련 다른 에피소드를 작품에 동원한다거나 이른바 ‘다성성’을 어느 작품보다「법률가의 이야기」에 효과적으로 적용하고 있다. 하나의 소재나 이슈에 대하여 입장과 생각이 다른 다양한 목소리들을 작품에 수용시킴으로서 초서는 종교적 믿음과 신앙을 자연스럽게 독자들에게 더욱더 부각한다.
Abstract
The Man of Law's Tale is a demonstration of religious characteristics in Chaucer's times, such as pathos and belief in the working of God through history, and his literary virtuosity. The pathetic style in The Man of Law's Tale, which aims to evoke pity and compassion in the behold and to elicit tears of sympathy, is pervasive and powerful in fourteenth and fifteenth century literature and art. Chaucer's principal artistic concern in The Man of Law's Tale is also to produce a strong emotional effect through re-shaping the situations of Trivet's Constance. Chaucer makes Constance into a passive innocent, alone and helpless, whose recurring plight invites a pathetic response in harmony with her own fearful laments. Above all, it is through the orchestration of multiple voices like Custance's spirituality and the narrator's worldliness that Chaucer's aim for vindicating orthodox medieval doctrines of Christianity is successfully achieved.
