토마스 베리의 생태 사상: 아메리카 원주민의 코스모비전(Cosmovision)과 지구 법학을 중심으로

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the cosmovision of indigenous peoples of the American continent and Thomas Berry's ecological ideas. Berry pointed out anthropocentrism, the myth of progress, patriarchy, and loss of reverence for the Earth as causes of the climate crisis. He proposed the Ecozoic era as a way to overcome the climate crisis. The construction of this ecological zone means breaking away from the industrial civilization created by human-centered consciousness and establishing a geocentric or eco-centric civilization. To this end, he stated that there is something to be learned from the cosmovision of Native Americans, which is far from anthropocentric thinking and exclusive dualism. Native people understood all beings in the natural world as having profound kinship, and respected not only living things but also non-living things as components of the earth community. The indigenous people hold the belief that all beings have an interiority or inner principle, that is, a living spirit, or their own internal mode of expression. Berry emphasized that humanity can escape the climate change crisis when we realize that the universe is not only a physical-material but also a mental-spiritual reality from the beginning. From a practical perspective, he believed that the creation of earth jurisprudence and the establishment of natural rights were vitalt. He also argued that the Native American cosmovision was a critical element in restoring community and achieving a harmonious relationship with the Earth.
