This study was conducted to systematically examine the terminology used to describe the role of a secretary, based on the problem that the term ‘secretary’ does not adequately reflect the current duties of the role. To achieve the research objectives, we examined the history of the secretary role, changes in duties, and the current usage of terms to describe the role. First, we analyzed the usage of terms to describe the secretary role in Korea through job platform analysis; and we examined the terms used to describe the secretary role overseas through Google Trend analysis. Based on the terms derived from the analysis of term usage in Korea and overseas, we conducted a survey targeting the general public, aspiring secretaries, and students majoring in secretary studies; and examined the differences in perception between these groups through one-way ANOVA and chi-square tests. The results of the study revealed that while a variety of terms are used to describe the secretary role overseas in addition to the traditional term ‘secretary’, in Korea, the usage frequency of ‘secretary’ is still overwhelmingly high. The survey results showed that there is a difference in the perception of the term ‘secretary’ between those related to secretary studies and the general public. When we surveyed suitable terms to replace ‘secretary’ that reflect the direction of development and vision of the secretary role in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution among the general group and the group related to the secretary role, the keywords commonly preferred by them were ‘office’ and ‘administrator’. This study is significant as it is the first attempt to find a modern term to describe the duties of a secretary, and we look forward to more active efforts to improve terminology in the future.
