Since waste is bound to be continuously generated as long as humankind engages in production activities,including population growth and economic development, it is necessary to develop energy technology that can secure energy while reducing greenhouses gases and environmental pollution according to waste treatment procedures. The production of plastics using fossil fuels, environmentally unsound waste disposal, and waste plastics and microplastics entering the ocean can cause serious environmental and economic problems. Globally, plastic production and waste generation are increasing, but the recycling rate is very low at 9%. Since incineration and landfill, the existing treatment methods for waste plastic, cause environmental pollution along with global warming, it is necessary to introduce thermochemical conversion technology to replace them. Therefore, this study sought implications of thermochemical conversion technology for waste plastics through analysis of patents and industrial trends.
