Does Entrepreneurial Orientation Affect Social Entrepreneurial Intention?

Purpose – Existing studies on individual-level factors affecting entrepreneurial intention have greatly emphasized the role of the entrepreneurial orientation of prospective entrepreneurs. Reflecting this research stream, a number of studies investigating the impact of entrepreneurial orientation on social entrepreneurial intention have been conducted in Korea. However, those studies showed limitations in three aspects: conceptual specifications related to entrepreneurial orientation, measurement of entrepreneurial orientation, and control of the impact of the other individual characteristics of entrepreneurs. Design/Methodology/Approach – In this paper, we examine whether the concept of entrepreneurial orientation can be adequately embodied, whether conceptual components of entrepreneurial orientation can be adequately measured, and whether, considering together the influence of other entrepreneur personal characteristics, there is sufficient influence of entrepreneurial orientation on social entrepreneurial intention. We conduct factor analysis and regression analysis of 200 university students in Seoul City and Gyeonggi-do Province. Findings – The result showed that entrepreneurial orientation could be conceptually embodied, conceptual components could be measured appropriately, and entrepreneurial orientation could maintain its intrinsic influence beyond that of the other personal characteristics of university students as prospective entrepreneurs. Research Implications – In relation to the education and training of potential entrepreneurs that want to start social enterprises in the future, there should be a focus on how to inspire the entrepreneurial orientation of prospective entrepreneurs. Additionally, in relation to the implementation of policy support for social enterprises, an evaluation of the innovativeness of the business model presented by potential entrepreneurs that want to start a social enterprise should be made more appropriately in the future.
