롤스 자유의 우선성 비판의 평등주의적 해석과정치적 자유의 공정한 가치를 활용한 대응

The priority of liberty is Rawls’ innovative mechanism to solidify theconceptual status of liberty. However, this priority has been challenged byvarious scholars. If these critiques hold logical validity and affect theessential themes of Rawls’ political philosophy, responding to them willdetermine the persuasiveness of Rawls’ theory. Therefore, this paper firstexamines the concept of the priority of liberty and explores foundationalcritiques as background in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, the paper delves into anegalitarian interpretation of the critique of the priority of liberty. Theegalitarian camp interprets the critique through an egalitarian lens, pointingout that the egalitarian aspects of Rawls’ theory have been diluted andoffering alternatives. Subsequently, Chapter 4 demonstrates that the fairvalue of political liberty can counter the egalitarian critique of the priority ofliberty. It argues that highlighting the fair value of political liberty is moreadvantageous for the coexistence of Rawls’ egalitarian implications and theconcept of the priority of liberty than the alternatives proposed by theegalitarian camp in Chapter 3. Finally, Chapter 5 acknowledges that for thefair value of political liberty to be meaningfully accepted in practice, it mustbe institutionally supplemented. The criticism that the role of the differenceprinciple has diminished since the political turn remains unresolved as alimitation of this paper.
