루쉰의 〈이혼〉 읽기 ― 근대소설과의 ‘이혼’을 함께 논하다

루쉰의 단편소설 〈이혼(離婚)〉은 그의 소설 가운데서 여성이 자신의 목소리를 직접 드러내는 드문 작품이다. 2막극 연극과도 같이 팡좡(龐莊) 행 연락선, 웨이 나리 댁 객실 장면으로 이루어져 있는데, 농촌 여성 아이구는 3년 동안의 이혼 소동을 ‘내기(賭氣)’의 심정으로 시비를 가리고자 한다. ‘내기’는 수많은 실패의 역사에도 불구하고 해방의 희망을 기대하는 행위로서 아이구의 거침없는 말하기를 통해서 수행된다. 흥미롭게도 〈이혼〉은 동시에 ‘근대소설’과의 ‘이혼’을 시도하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 〈이혼〉은 전통 연극 속의 유형적 인물들의 대화가 서사의 중심을 이룬다는 점에서 연극적 성격이 강한 소설이다. 소설이라기보다는 연극에 가까워진 작품을 두고 루쉰은 만족할 만한 자신의 성취로 평가했다. 루쉰은 〈이혼〉을 통하여 이제까지 자신의 소설 쓰기에 대해 근본적인 질문을 던지고 있는 것으로 보인다. 다시 말해 그의 글쓰기 생애에서 마침내 근대소설과 ‘이혼’할 시점이 도래했음을 보여주는 작품이라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Lu Xun’s short story Divorce is notable for being the only one among Lu Xun’s works where the narrative is primarily driven by the voice of a rural woman, Aigu (愛姑), making it the only story where a female character directly expresses her own voice. Divorce is structured in two scenes, resembling a two-act play: the first unfolds on a passenger boat heading to Pangzhuang(龐莊), and the second takes place in the guest room of Master Wei‘s(慰) house. In these scenes, Aigu tries to resolve a three-year-long divorce dispute, feeling as though she is making a “wager.” This act of “wagering” symbolizes her hope for liberation, even after multiple failures. Interestingly, Divorce also seems to signify an attempt to “divorce” from the genre of modern fiction itself. Rather than focusing on the narrator‘s description, the story heavily relies on dialogue, giving it astrong dramatic quality. By the time he wrote Divorce, the final story in Wandering, it seems that Lu Xun was fundamentally questioning the act of writing fiction. Divorce can be seen as a pivotal moment in his literary journey, marking his “divorce” from modern fiction as a genre.
