This study aims to theoretically discuss the conceptual relationship between deep acting and surface acting. Although previous research has not directly addressed the relationship between deep acting and surface acting, a comprehensive review reveals two opposing perspectives. This study labels these perspectives as unidimensional and bidimensional. Furthermore, the study introduces a new integrative perspective to examine deep acting and surface acting. To achieve the research objectives, the study follows these steps: First, it organizes the logical foundations of the unidimensional and bidimensional perspectives based on a review of existing studies. Second, it explains the relationship between deep acting and surface acting through the lens of Gray's Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory by introducing a new integrative perspective. Specifically, it analyzes the conceptual aspects of deep acting and surface acting through the Behavioral Activation System (which seeks to gain potential opportunities and rewards by moving towards desired goals) and the Behavioral Inhibition System (which seeks to prevent or avoid aversive outcomes by stopping ongoing actions). Furthermore, the integrative perspective provides various interpretative possibilities for both unidimensional and bidimensional perspectives. Finally, the study discusses its significance and suggests directions for future research, emphasizing the importance of qualitative research methods in studying emotional labor.
