한국 법학자의 초기 정체성 —제1세대 법학자를 중심으로—

This paper aims to examine the issue of the identity of Korean legal scholars in the current law school system, by tracing its historical roots. To this end, it first adopts the recurring consciousness of identity issues expressed in past reflections on Korean legal studies, and seeks to investi- gate the early conditions and problem patterns that caused these concerns. Following this, the paper proceeds by selecting two first-generation legal scholars who are believed to have closely approached the ideal models in light of the above-identified issues, and analyzing their achievements and limitations. The reason for this approach is the belief that later generations of legal scholars acquire their ambitions, attitudes, and norms as legal professionals through the influence of these early models. Lastly, through a concluding section, the paper briefly assesses the situation in the era of democratization and the current law school system in connection with the past. In conclusion, the tasks for today's legal scholars struggling with their identity include resisting the temptation of material gain through a pure passion for jurisprudence, maintaining intellectual integrity, drawing clear boundaries between one's professional and other personal activities, pursuing theoretical depth that can illuminate practical work while bearing social responsibility for the theory, and fostering mutual cooperation and honest peer evaluation toward the shared goal of advancing legal scholarship—lessons drawn from past experiences.
