Early Growth Characteristics on Apple Rootstock (‘M.26’) Applying Cylindrical Paper Pot Size, Irrigation Method and Irrigation Frequency

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of cylindrical paper pot (CPP) size, irrigation method and irrigation frequency on the early growth of ‘M.26’ as a remarkable rootstock of apple in Korea. ‘M.26’ was utilized into 2, 3, and 4-inch CPPs, watering with overhead irrigation, subirrigation and their mixed method, and irrigation frequency was 1 time or 2 times every four days. Evapotranspiration amount of ‘M.26’ rootstock on July 25 and August 25 was 6,821 g/m2/day and 7,718 g/m2/day, respectively. Leaves number of ‘M.26’ in the 2-inch CPP treatment were increased by 23.2% than that of control (no CPP treatment), and leaves length 60.0%. As compared to control, leaves number, dry weight of leaves, and root length of 2-inch CPP watering overhead irrigation (2CPP-O) were increased by 23.2%, 60.0%, and 12.8%, respectively. Compared to control, leaves number and leaves dry weight of 2-inch CPP treatment watering 4 days interval with overhead irrigation method (2CPP-W1) was increased by 19.1% and 60.0%, respectively. These results indicated that when ‘M.26’ rootstock applying CPP was planted in 2-inch CPP, and then watered every 4 days with overhead irrigation method, it increased the growth of apple rootstock seedling by improving growth of root and leaf.
