본 연구는 기업에 대한 뉴스 기사의 텍스트 정보가 향후 기업 이익과 수익률을 예측할 수 있는지 검증하였다. 이를 위해 코스피200 지수에 포함된 기업의 뉴스 기사 약 50만개를 수집한 후, KOSELF(Korean Sentiment Lexicon for Finance) 감성 사전을 사용하여 텍스트에 나온 긍정어와 부정어의 수를 측정하는 방법으로 뉴스 기사의 감성변수를 계산하였다. 이익공표일 이전의 뉴스 기사의 감성은 기업의 이익을 통계적으로 유의미하게 예측하였다. 특히 부정적 감성이 긍정적 감성보다 더 강한 예측력을 가지고 있었다. 이는 뉴스 기사에 기업의 미래 이익에 대한 의미있는 정보가 내포되어 있음을 의미한다. 더 나아가 뉴스 기사의 감성과 미래 주식 수익률과의 관계를 살펴보았다. 뉴스 기사의 감성이 이익공표일 이후의 시장 반응에 대해서는 예측력을 가지고 있지 않았지만, 다음 날의 주가 변화와는 유의미하게 연관되어 있었다. 지금까지의 결과들은 뉴스 기사의 텍스트가 기업의 미래 이익과 주식 수익률에 대한 유의미한 정보를 포함하고 있음을 보여준다. 또한, 뉴스 정보가 시장 참여자들에게 영향을 주고 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
We investigate whether the text of news articles about companies can predict future corporate earnings and stock returns. We collect news articles of companies included in the KOSPI 200 index and calculate the sentiment variable of news articles by measuring the number of positive and negative words in the text using a sentiment dictionary of KOSELF(Korean Sentiment Lexicon for Finance). The sentiment of news articles prior to the earnings announcement date is statistically significant in predicting corporate earnings, with negative sentiment having stronger predictability than positive sentiment. This suggests that news articles contain meaningful information about a firm's future earnings. We further examine the relationship between news sentiment and future stock returns. News sentiment does not have predictive power for the market's reaction to earnings announcements, but it is significantly associated with the next day's stock returns. These results show that the text of news articles contains meaningful information about a firm's future earnings and stock returns, suggesting that news information influences market participants.
