물질적 전환(Material Turn)과 생태적 디자인- 물질 기반 실험적 디자인의 생태론적 의미 분석

Ecological design primarily focuses on materials, especially their non-hazardous disposal recyclability within the production-consumption system. This approach stems from understanding the material nature of the medium. Since the 2000s, designers have conducted material-driven experiments to develop biodegradable materials while exploring medium recyclability, leading to both new material innovations and philosophical investigations into the circular sustainability of materials. This article first examines material-driven design experiments, analyzing their connections to the Material Turn and their ecological significance. Drawing on Tim Ingold’s “Materials against Materiality,’ this research argues that the understanding of the characteristics of ‘material’ is key to the ecological design approach. It then illuminates the inherent vitality of materials through the linguistic analysis of related terms including matter, property, and quality. Finally, the research examines the emphasis on handcraftsmanship in material-driven design experiments, suggesting that making, grounded in craftsmanship, offers an alternative perspective on ecological design.
