In this study, to enhance accessibility to pharmaceutical waste collection facilities, we propose a methodology to determine the optimal locations for pharmaceutical waste collection bins by considering the locations of existing post boxes. The study specifically targets areas with insufficient pharmaceutical waste collection infrastructure relative to the population. Considering that post boxes can partially cover pharmaceutical waste collection demand, areas already served by post box locations are excluded from further analysis. Subsequently, the minimum number of candidate locations required to cover the remaining underserved areas is determined using a set-covering model. Finally, the optimal locations for pharmaceutical waste collection bins are identified through a p-median model, taking into account the distance between demand points and candidate sites, the number of households in each demand area, and the proximity to central facilities at candidate locations. By installing pharmaceutical waste collection bins at these identified optimal locations, accessibility to pharmaceutical waste collection facilities can be significantly improved, consequently leading to an increase in the collection of pharmaceutical waste.
