브라이도티의 조에적 감수성으로 J. M. 쿳시의 『마이클 K의 삶과 시대』 다시 읽기

Revisiting J. M. Coetzee's Life and Times of Michael K through Braidotti's Zoe Sensibility

초록

This paper attempts to read J. M. Coetzee’s Life & Times of Michael K through Rosi Braidotti’s posthuman concept of “zoe.” While the novel has been largely examined through postcolonialism, violence, ethics, and biopower, this study explores its deeper engagement with breaking cycles of human violence. The novel’s exploration of violence, particularly its movement toward a new horizon, becomes evident in the latter part of Part One, during Michael’s second stay at the Visagie farm—a space where human-nonhuman and living-nonliving hierarchies dissolve. By analyzing this breakdown of boundaries between humans, animals, and matter, this paper examines Michael’s “becoming posthuman” and Coetzee’s radical dismantling of humanist discourse.
