초록
[연구목적] 본 연구는 2011년부터 2021년까지 한국 상장기업 3,674개를 대상으로 경제정책 불확실성이 기업성과(ROA)에 미치는 영향을 분석하고, ESG 등급의 조절 효과를 검토하였다. [연구방법] 본 연구는 KIS－Value, 한국은행 경제통계시스템 및 TS2000에서 관련 자료를 수집한 후 경제정책 불확실성을 통화정책, 재정정책, 무역정책, 외환정책으로 세분화하여 살펴보았다. 추가로 도구 변수를 활용한 패널 2SLS 분석을 통해 결과의 강건성을 검증한다. [연구결과] 네 가지 경제정책 불확실성(MPU, FPU, TPU, FEPU)은 모두 기업성과에 통계적으로 유의한 음(－)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. ESG 등급은 경제정책 불확실성이 기업성과에 미치는 부정적 영향을 완화하는 조절 효과를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 강건성 검증을 위해 도구 변수를 활용한 2SLS 분석 결과, 주요 결과가 일관되게 나타나연구 결과의 신뢰성을 뒷받침하였다. [연구의 시사점] 경제정책 불확실성이 기업성과에 부정적인 영향을 미친다는 점을 확인함으로써, 정책 입안자들에게 안정적이고 예측 가능한 정책 환경을 조성할 필요성을 제시한다. ESG 경영이 불확실성 환경에서 기업의 경영 안정성과 성과를 개선할 수 있는 중요한 전략적 요소임을 강조하며, 기업 경영진과 투자자들에게 ESG 활동의 중요성을 환기시킨다.
Abstract
[Purpose] This study examines the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on firm performance (ROA) and the moderating effect of ESG ratings, using data from 3,674 listed firms in South Korea (2011－2021) sourced from KIS－Value, the Bank of Korea Economic Statistics System, and TS2000. [Methodology] EPU is categorized into monetary, fiscal, trade, and foreign exchange policy uncertainty, and the robustness of the results is tested using a panel two－stage least squares (2SLS) model with instrumental variables. [Findings] All four types of EPU(MPU, FPU, TPU, FEPU) negatively affect firm performance, while ESG ratings mitigate these adverse effects, demonstrating their moderating role. Instrumental variable tests confirm the reliability and consistency of the findings. [Implications] This study highlights the need for stable and predictable policy environments to reduce the negative impact of EPU and emphasizes the strategic importance of ESG management in enhancing corporate stability and performance under uncertainty.
