본 연구는 외국인투자자의 투자기간(장기와 단기)을 중심으로 외국인투자자가 기업혁신에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 2011년부터 2022년까지 한국 상장기업 표본을 대상으로, 외국인투자자의 월별 시가총액 회전율을 바탕으로 측정된 투자기간은 특허출원건수로 측정된 차기 기업혁신에 유의한 양(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 외국인투자자의 투자기간과 특허출원건수 간의 긍정적 연관성은 외국인투자자의 지분율과 는 무관한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과는 기업혁신을 촉진하는데에 있어 외국인투자자의 지분 정도 보다는 투자기간이 중요하게 작용할 수 있음을 보여주는 결과이다. 2023년 12월 외국인 등록제도 폐지로 단기적 성향을 갖는 외국인투자자 또한 한국 자본시장에 유입될 가능성이 커졌다. 따라서 본 연구의 결과는 시장차원에서 장기적 성향의 외국인투자자를 유치할 수 있는 정책이, 그리고 기업 차원에서 장기적 혁신을 지속할 수 있는 지배구조로 개편하는 방안이 마련될 필요가 있다는 시사점을 제공한다.
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between foreign investors and corporate innovation, focusing on their investment horizons measured by the trading turnover ratio―distinguishing between long-term and short-term orientations. Using a sample of Korean listed firms from 2011 to 2022, we find that the longer the investment horizons of foreign investors, the more positively they influence subsequent corporate innovation. These results suggest that foreign investors’ investment horizons may play a more significant role than the extent of foreign ownership in promoting corporate innovation. While foreign investors play a monitoring role for management, they also encourage myopic decision-making when acting as traders. Overall, in the Korean capital market, stronger long-termism fosters monitoring and positively affects corporate innovation. With the abolition of the foreign investment certificate system (IRC), it is expected that a large number of short-term foreign investors would turn their attentions to the Korean capital market. This study highlights the need for policies aimed at attracting long-term investors.
