일상의 정치 현실 속 평화의 추구 - 플라톤의 『법률』 1권에 나타난 정치적 존재와 인간 본성 규율의 문제 -

This study examines the realistic conception of peace and political existence contained in the dialogic context of the Book I of Plato’s Laws . I argue that the concept of peace presented in the opening section of the Laws is not envisioned as an ideal state contrasted with war, but rather as an existential ground of being in the polis . Previous studies in Plato’s philosophy of peace have focused on limited discussions about the problem of war, simply emphasizing the morality of political leadership or philosophical implications of the military training of rulers and political security. These scholarly approaches tend to highlight only certain aspects of Plato’s political thoughts while failing to adequately consider the dramatic context and dialogical interactions among the various interlocutors in the Platonic dialogues. But the close reading of the dramatic context of the Book I of the Laws reveals the meaning of peace (eirēnē) can be understood not as a transcendental or divine condition of human beings, but as a political way of life to achieve the best-possible mode of everyday coexistence. In this light, this study conducts a detailed analysis of the dramatic context surrounding the theme of peace in the opening part of the Laws illuminating the dialogical interactions of the characters. Thereby, it discloses the practical possibility of peace as a pollitical way of being, which must be based on the ethical regulation of human nature in everyday life.
