벤처기업의 혁신지향성이 ESG 경영을 통해 혁신성과로 이어지는가?

기업의 지속가능한 발전을 위한 ESG(Environmental, Social, Governance) 경영이 전 세계적으로 중요한 화두가 되고 있으며, 기업 혁신성과에 관한 연구도 학문적·실무적으로 높은 관심을 받고 있다. 그러나 ESG 경영이 기업의 혁신성과에 미치는 영향과 그 작용 메커니즘에 대한 실증 연구는 아직 미진한 실정이다. 본 연구의 목적은 혁신지향적 벤처기업을 대상으로 ESG 경영이 혁신성과 창출에 기여하는지 규명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 국내 벤처기업 302개사를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하고, 수집된 데이터를 구조방정식모형으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 혁신지향성이 높을수록 조직 내 혁신행동과 친환경경영, 지배구조가 유의하게 향상되는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 여러 영향 요인 중 혁신지향성은 혁신성과에 가장 강한 정(+)의 효과를 보였으며, 혁신행동 역시 혁신성과를 높이는 유의한 요인으로 확인되었다. 한편 ESG 활동 중 사회적책임은 혁신성과에 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 이는 사회적책임이 주로 기업의 외부 평판 제고에 초점이 맞춰져 있어 당장의 혁신성과로 이어지기 어렵다는 점을 시사한다. 이로써 제안된 9개 가설 중 사회적책임 관련 가설을 제외한 8개가 지지되었다. 아울러 혁신행동과 ESG 요인의 매개효과를 검증한 결과, 혁신행동과 친환경경영, 지배구조는 혁신지향성과 혁신성과 간 관계를 매개하였으나 사회적책임의 매개효과는 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 혁신지향성과 혁신행동이라는 내부 역량과 ESG 경영활동의 접점을 분석함으로써 지속가능경영과 기업 혁신 간 관계에 대한 이해를 높였으며, 벤처기업 실무자들이 ESG 전략을 활용하여 혁신성과를 향상시키는 방안을 모색하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대한다. 이론적으로는 ESG 경영과 혁신성과 간의 관련성을 밝혀 지속가능경영 연구에 기여하고, 실무적으로는 벤처기업의 ESG 전략 수립 방향에 근거를 제시하였다.
Abstract
ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) management for sustainable corporate development has become an important topic worldwide, and research on corporate innovation is also receiving high academic and practical interest. However, empirical research on the impact of ESG management on corporate innovation and its mechanism of action is still insufficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether ESG management contributes to innovation performance in innovation-oriented venture companies. To this end, a survey was conducted on 302 domestic venture companies, and the collected data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The analysis revealed that higher innovation orientation significantly improves innovation behavior, eco-friendly management, and governance within the organization. Among various influencing factors, innovation orientation showed the strongest positive effect on innovation performance, and innovation behavior was also confirmed as a significant factor in enhancing innovation performance. Meanwhile, social responsibility among ESG activities was not statistically significant in terms of innovation performance. This suggests that social responsibility is primarily focused on enhancing a company's external reputation, making it difficult to directly translate into innovation performance. As a result, eight of the nine proposed hypotheses were supported, excluding the hypothesis related to social responsibility. Additionally, the results of verifying the mediating effects of innovation behavior and ESG factors showed that innovation behavior, eco-friendly management, and corporate governance mediated the relationship between innovation orientation and innovation performance, but the mediating effect of social responsibility was not significant. This study enhanced understanding of the relationship between sustainable management and corporate innovation by analyzing the intersection of internal capabilities such as innovation orientation and innovation behavior with ESG management activities. It is expected to contribute to venture company practitioners exploring ways to enhance innovation performance by leveraging ESG strategies. Theoretically, it clarified the relationship between ESG management and innovation performance, contributing to sustainable management research, and practically, it provided a basis for establishing ESG strategies for venture companies.
