The Social Responsibility of Psychiatrists: Initiatives of the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association

정찬승(대한신경정신의학회 사회공헌위원회)

64권 3호, 122~128쪽

초록

Psychiatrists play a pivotal role in sustaining the mental resilience and social cohesion of contemporary society. Beyond clinical practice, their commitment to public mental health constitutes a profound form of social responsibility. This article presents the evolving landscape of social responsibility among psychiatrists in Korea, centering on the initiatives led by the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association’s Social Responsibility Committee. Since its formal establishment in 2018, the Committee has transitioned from direct outreach to vulnerable populations toward capacity-building, intersectoral collaboration, and systemic advocacy, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and large-scale disasters. The key domains of activity include disaster mental health response, support for trauma-informed journalism, mental health services for artists, refugees, and migrants, and public advocacy through media commentary. Notably, psychiatrists have developed mental health guidelines for journalists and interpreters in disaster settings, established peer support groups for media professionals, and spearheaded outreach efforts such as “MIND RUN,” a running-based mental health initiative. These efforts exemplify a comprehensive model of psychiatric engagement that integrates clinical insight, community participation, and ethical leadership. By articulating the core principles—mental health promotion, capacity enhancement, strategic partnerships, efficiency, and mutual growth—this contribution underscores the significance of psychiatry’s public mission. In doing so, it reaffirms the psychiatrist’s role not only as a healer of individuals, but also as a responsible agent within the collective fabric of society.
