생활용품에서 쉽게 접하게 되는 크램쉘 패키지는 개봉 과정에서 사용자에게 심리적·물리적 어려움과 위험을 유발하는 사례가 빈번하게 발생하고 있다. 이에, 본 연구는 클램쉘 패키지의 사용자들이 개봉 시에 겪는 불편함과 위험성을 조사하고 분석하여, 사용자 중심 패키지 디자인으로의 개선 필요성을 제언하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해, 밀폐된 클램쉘 패키지와 동일 구조의 블리스터 패키지 간의 개봉 용이성 및 안전성 차이를 비교분석하였다. 연구 방법은, 먼저, 20(남녀 각 10명)명을 대상으로 일대일 포커스 녹화 인터뷰를 실시하여 두가지 패키지에 대한 개봉 행위를 기록하고 관찰하였다. 이후, 100(남녀 각 50명)명의 응답자를 대상으로 실시된 온라인 설문조사를 통해 연구 결과의 일관성을 확인하였다. 한달에 걸쳐 진행된 실험은 도널드 노먼(Donald A. Norman)과 렉스 하트슨(H. Rex Hartson)의 어포던스 이론을 기반으로 하였다. 한편, 설문은 노먼의 '행위의 7단계 모델'을 기반으로 한 '7가지 기본적인 디자인 원칙의 질문'을 고려하여 설계되었다. 연구 결과, 플라스틱 재질과 밀봉된 구조적 특성으로 인해 사용자들이 손만으로 개봉하기 어렵고, 가위나 칼과 같은 위험한 도구를 사용하는 과정에서 부상이 발생하는 사례가 나타났다. 또한, 개봉 방법에 대한 안내의 부재는 도구가 있음에도 불구하고 사용자에게 혼란과 어려움을 초래하였다. 이와 같은 결과는, 하트슨의 네 가지 어포던스(인지적, 기능적, 물리적, 감각적)를 통합적으로 반영하는 사용자 중심의 클램쉘 패키지 디자인에 대한 필요성을 시사한다. 따라서, 본 연구는 사용자와 어포던스의 상호작용을 개선하는 직관적인 클램쉘 패키지의 구조와 접착 디자인에 대한 개선을 제언한다. 향후 연구로는 이를 바탕으로 한 구체적인 디자인 방안에 대한 제시를 제안한다.
Abstract
Clamshell packages commonly encountered in consumer goods frequently cause psychological and physical difficulties, as well as safety risks, during the opening process. Therefore, this study aims to investigate and analyze the inconveniences and risks experienced by users when opening clamshell packages, and to suggest improvements based on user-centered package design. To this end, a comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the differences in ease of opening and safety between sealed clamshell packages and blister packages with identical structures. Initially, the research methodology involved conducting one-on-one, filmed focus group interviews with 20 participants (each comprising 10 males and 10 females), during which the opening behaviors for both types of packages were recorded and observed. Subsequently, an online survey was administered to 100 respondents (each comprising 50 males and 51 females) to verify the consistency of the results. The framework of this month-long study was based on the affordance theory proposed by Donald A. Norman and Rex Hartson. Meanwhile, the survey was designed to incorporate “questions from the seven fundamental design principles”, based on Norman’s “Seven Stages of Action” model. The results of the study demonstrated that the robustness of the plastic material and the sealed structural design significantly hindered manual opening, frequently resulting in injuries caused by the use of hazardous tools such as scissors or knives. Furthermore, the absence of clear instructions regarding the opening procedure caused confusion and difficulties among users, despite the availability of tools. These results underscore the necessity of designing user-centric clamshell packages that integrally and intuitively reflect Hartson’s four affordances—cognitive, functional, physical, and sensory. Accordingly, this study proposes structural and adhesive design improvements to enhance the intuitive interactions between users and affordances. Future research will focus on proposing specific design solutions based on these findings.
