본 연구는 대학생을 대상으로 생명의료윤리 의식과 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도 간의 관계를 확인하기 위해 수행된 서술적 조사연구이다. 최근 고령화와 의학기술의 발달로 연명치료 중단에 대한 논의가 사회적으로 확산되고 있으며, 이 과정에서 생명에 대한 윤리적 가치와 개인의 자기결정권에 대한 관심이 더욱 부각되고 있다. 지금까지 연명치료 중단에 대한 연구는 주로 고령자나 환자를 중심으로 이루어져 왔으며, 미래의 의료결정 주체가 될 청년층, 특히 대학생에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 대학생의 생명의료윤리 의식을 측정하고, 이들이 연명치료 중단에 대해 어떠한 태도를 가지고 있는지를 분석함으로써, 이들 간의 관련성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 대학생의 생명의료윤리 의식 수준이 높을수록 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도 또한 높게 나타나는 유의한 정적 상관관계가 확인되었다. 이는 생명의료윤리에 대한 인식이 개인의 죽음에 대한 결정, 특히 연명치료 중단에 있어 중요한 판단 기준으로 작용함을 시사한다. 이러한 결과는 대학 교육과정 내에서 생명의료윤리에 대한 체계적인 교육의 필요성을 제기하며, 더 나아가 대학생과 같은 젊은 세대를 대상으로 한 윤리교육과 정책적 접근이 병행되어야 함을 보여준다. 향후에는 다양한 배경을 가진 청년층을 포함한 후속 연구가 요구된다.
Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between biomedical ethics awareness and attitudes toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment among university students. As population aging and medical advances expand debates on treatment withdrawal, the ethical value of life and individual autonomy have gained greater attention. While prior research has focused on older adults and patients, little is known about younger populations. Using a descriptive survey, this study assessed students’ biomedical ethics awareness and their attitudes toward treatment withdrawal. Results revealed a significant positive correlation, suggesting that stronger ethics awareness is associated with more supportive attitudes. These findings highlight the importance of systematic biomedical ethics education within university curricula and suggest that targeted ethical education and policy approaches for younger generations are warranted.
