A Study on Reliability Requirements for Space Mission Assurance

Purpose: This study examines the mission assurance policies and associated standards of leading spacefaring nations to identify their document frameworks, analyze mission assurance requirements, and interpret these requirements from a reliability perspective. Methods: By comparing and analyzing documents from NASA, ESA, and JAXA, this study identifies mission assurance requirements and interprets their significance in relation to reliability objectives. Results: From a reliability standpoint, NASA’s 15 mission assurance requirement areas can serve as a checklist for proactively addressing potential failure modes. This study provides an overview of how these requirements may be addressed through the application of appropriate reliability analysis methods within the reliability assurance process. Conclusion: For space system development in Korea, it will be necessary to establish mission assurance requirements and to develop standardized reliability assurance procedures to meet them. This study may serve as baseline reference material for future efforts aimed at building mission assurance infrastructure.
