디지털 전환과 녹색 혁신, 그리고 환경적 지속가능성의 상호작용: 중국 제조기업을 중심으로

최근 심화되는 환경오염 우려 속에서 기업들은 환경적 지속가능성 확보를 위해 디지털 기술을 통합한 녹색 혁신을 핵심 전략으로 채택하고 있다. 그러나 녹색 혁신은 효과가 나타나기까지 상당한 시간과 자원이 요구되며, 성과의 불확실성으로 인해 실질적 이행으로 이어지기 어렵다. 디지털 전환은 정보 확산, 투명성 제고, 교차 지식 공유를 통해 임계값 문제와 불일치 가능성을 완화함으로써 이러한 한계를 극복할 수 있으나, 이에 대한 학술적 논의는 여전히 부족하다. 본 연구는 이러한 공백을 해소하기 위해 자연자원 기반 관점(NRBV)을 이론적 틀로 삼아 디지털 전환, 녹색 혁신, 그리고 기업의 환경적 지속가능성 간의 메커니즘을 고찰했다. 이를 위해 중국 제조기업 338개 표본 데이터를 활용하여 부분최소제곱 구조방정식 모형(PLS-SEM)을 적용한 실증분석을 수행했다. 분석 결과, 디지털 전환은 녹색 혁신에 긍정적 영향을 미치며, 녹색 혁신은 기업의 환경적 지속가능성을 유의하게 강화하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 녹색 혁신은 디지털 전환과 기업의 환경적 지속가능성 간의 관계를 부분적으로 매개하는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구는 디지털 전환을 녹색 혁신의 제약을 완화하고 기업의 환경적 지속가능성을 강화하는 전략적 자원으로 개념화함으로써 자연자원 기반 관점을 확장했다. 아울러 디지털 전환이 녹색 혁신을 촉진하는 핵심 동인임을 실증적으로 규명함으로써, 관리자와 정책 입안자에게 디지털 전략이 기업의 지속가능한 발전을 촉진할 수 있는 구체적 통찰을 제공한다.
Abstract
Amid intensifying concerns over environmental pollution, firms are increasingly adopting green innovation that integrates digital technologies as a core strategy to enhance environmental sustainability. However, green innovation often requires considerable time and resources to yield results, and its practical implementation is challenged by performance uncertainty. Digital transformation can help overcome these limitations by mitigating threshold barriers and reducing inconsistencies through information diffusion, enhanced transparency, and cross-knowledge sharing. Nevertheless, academic discussion on these mechanisms remains limited. To address this gap, this study employs the natural resource-based view (NRBV) as a theoretical framework to examine the mechanisms linking digital transformation, green innovation, and environmental sustainability. An empirical analysis was conducted using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with survey data from 338 Chinese manufacturing firms. The results indicate that digital transformation positively influences green innovation, and that green innovation significantly enhances firms’ environmental sustainability. Moreover, green innovation was found to partially mediate the relationship between digital transformation and environmental sustainability. This study extends the NRBV by conceptualizing digital transformation as a strategic resource that alleviates the constraints of green innovation and strengthens firms’ environmental sustainability. In addition, by empirically identifying digital transformation as a key driver of green innovation, it provides managers and policymakers with concrete insights into how digital strategies can promote the sustainable development of firms.
