초록
이 글은 20세기 미국의 유명 소아과 의사인 벤저민 M. 스팍(Benjamin M. Spock)의 1960년대 이후 정치적 활동으로의 전환에 대해 살펴본다. 1946년 육아서인 유아 와 아동 양육의 상식(The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care) 의 출판으 로 국민 “아기 전문 의사(Baby doctor)”로서 명성을 얻은 스팍은 독자들과의 소통 을 확장하며 전국적인 인지도를 갖게 된다. 확장된 영향력과 인지도는 그를 인자 하고 친근한 국민 의사에서 열정적인 정치 활동가로 거듭나게 하였다. 인자하고 온건하며 정파적이지 않아 모든 것을 포용할 것 같은 그의 친근한 이미지는 가장 정치적인 공간으로 그를 끌어들였다. 원자력 정책 국가위원회(The National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy: SANE)를 시작으로 베트남 전쟁 반대운동, 민 권운동의 열렬한 지지자로, 그리고 1972년에는 대통령 선거에 도전하여 자신의 정 치적 이상을 현실화하려고 시도하였다. 스팍이 처음부터 정치적 행보를 하려 하거나 권력자가 되려는 의도를 지니고 있었던 것은 아니었으며 그가 추구한 가치와 이상의 방향은 사적 욕심보다 공적 목표 를 향해 있었다. 1960년대 이후 그의 정치적 행보는 그러한 그의 중심 가치와 방향 의 범위가 확장되는 과정이었다. 그가 소아과 의사로서 좀 더 나은 환경에서 아이 들이 자라기를 바랐던 것과 마찬가지로 정치적 활동은 미래 세대를 위한 더 나은 사회를 위한 초석이 된다고 믿었다. 특히 스팍은 소아과학 전문가의 관점에서 미 래 세대를 위해 좋은 사회를 구축하는 정치적 활동이 모순된다고 생각하지 않았 다. 이 글에서는 이러한 스팍의 정치적 활동에 초점을 맞추어 그가 어떠한 지향점 과 가치를 지니고 있었는지를 분석해 보려 한다. 20세기 미국 사회에 영향력을 지 녔던 인물의 정치적 이상이 현대 사회에 주는 시사점을 고찰해 보려 한다.
Abstract
This study examines Benjamin M. Spock, who was a renowned American pediatrician in the 20th century, and his transition to political activism since the 1960s. Having gained fame as a national “baby doctor” through the publication of The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, published in 1946, Spock developed a national profile by expanding communication with readers. His expanded influence and recognition allowed him to become a passionate political activist from a compassionate and friendly national doctor. His friendly image, which was compassionate, moderate, and non-partisan, seemingly embracing everything, had drawn him into the most contentious arena. Starting with The National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE), he became an avid supporter of the Anti-Vietnam War movement and civil rights movement, and in 1972, he challenged the presidential election to try to realize his political ideals. Although Spock did not intend to take political action or become a powerful person from the beginning, the values and ideals he pursued were aimed at public goals rather than private greed. His political moves since the 1960s had been a process of expanding the scope of such central values and directions. Just as he hoped that children would grow up in a better environment as a pediatrician, Spock himself believed that political participation would be a cornerstone for a better society for future generations. In particular, Spock did not think that political activities to build a better society for future generations contradicted from the perspective of pediatric experts. This paper deals with what motivated Spock to deeply engaged in political activism.
