In modern society, stress has become a critical factor that negatively affects both physical health and overall quality of life. As concerns about the side effects of drug dependence continue to grow, there is an increasing interest in non-pharmacological alternative therapies such as aromatherapy. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the stress-reducing effects of aromatherapy across different application methods and explore its potential for use in aesthetic programs. A meta-analysis was conducted, selecting 129 papers (508 cases) published between 2000 and 2017. The results are as follows: First, massage therapy demonstrated the greatest effect on stress related to daily life and work. Second, inhalation therapy demonstrated a moderate effect on mental and emotional stress. Third, other application methods demonstrated the greatest effect on mental and emotional stress. These results suggest that aromatherapy is effective as a complementary therapy for stress management. Therefore, the results of this study can serve as a baseline for field professionals, including aestheticians and educators, to design customized aesthetic programs for different stress types.
