영화 속 미장센 연출과 텍스타일 디자인의 상관관계 연구 -미술감독 류성희의 벽지 디자인을 중심으로-

In recent films and dramas, wallpaper design has become more than just a decorative element, but a key visual device in the mise-en-scène. This study explores the aesthetic and narrative role of wallpaper in the works of production designer Ryu Seong-hie, focusing on how textile design and color composition visualize emotion and space. Five representative works selected for the study <Oldboy, 2003>, <The Handmaiden, 2016>, <Decision to Leave, 2022>, <Little Women, 2022>, <When Life Gives You Tangerines, 2025>, which are all distinctly utilize wallpaper designs. In these works, wallpaper becomes a key element that intuitively conveys emotional arcs and directorial intent through meticulously calibrated patterns, textures, and color palettes. In Oldboy, the vivid geometric designs in an enclosed space reflect repressed rage and claustrophobia. In The Decision to Leave, and organic wallpaper pattern resembling a mountainous seascape suggests the emotional waves of desire. The floral wallpaper in Little Women has a dual structure—appearing beautiful from afar but revealing hidden faces up close—to express psychological tension and conflicting desire. In addition, the wallpaper used in When Life Gives You Tangerines, reflects the time period and the emotions of the characters, giving the space a complex emotion. As a textile element, wallpaper functions as the skin of space and the surface of emotion. By revealing the complex functions that wallpaper design plays in narrative construction and emotional production in cinema, this study highlights the potential for textile design to expand as a medium that integrates visual art and emotional communication. It suggests the strategic value and artistic possibilities of textile design as an integrated tool for cinematic art, spatial organization, and emotional communication.
