산업 전반에 걸쳐 생성형 AI의 활용이 증가함에 따라 디자인 교육에서는 이를 효과적으로 활용할 수 있도록 지원하는 디자인 방법론과 교수학습법 개발이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구는 디자인 전공 학습자가 디자인 제작과정에서 생성형 AI 도구를 활용하는 방식과 학습 경험을 분석하여 효과적인 활용방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 절차와 방법으로 수행하였다. 문헌 연구를 통해 생성형 AI의 개념과 특징, 디자인 분야에서 생성형 AI의 활용 현황에 대해 이해하고, 디자인 제작과정에서 생성형 AI 도구를 사용하는 수업을 설계하여 디자인 전공 학습자의 활용 방식과 학습 경험을 평가하였다. 연구 결과, 디자인 전공 학습자는 디자인 제작과정에서 ‘단일 프롬프트 기반 생성’, ‘그래픽 요소 선택적 생성’, ‘스케치 기반 생성’, ‘프롬프트 연계 생성’의 네 가지 방식으로 생성형 AI를 활용하는 것으로 나타났다. 생성형 AI를 활용한 학습 경험 평가 결과, 디자인 전공 학습자들은 자기효능감, 학습 동기 및 흥미, 학습 만족도, 창의적 사고력 순으로 높은 만족도를 보였으나, AI 활용 역량 항목에서는 상대적으로 만족도가 낮게 평가되었다. 디자인 전공 학습자는 생성형 AI를 활용하여 결과물의 완성도 향상, 아이디어 확장 및 창의성 자극, 작업 시간의 단축 및 효율성 증대, 표현력 확대가 가능하다는 점에서 유용하다고 응답하였으나, 프롬프트 작성과 수정 과정에서 가장 큰 어려움을 경험한 것으로 나타났다. 이는 AI 활용 역량에 대한 낮은 만족도를 나타낸 것과 연계하여 해석할 수 있으며 프롬프트 작성 역량을 강화하기 위한 교육의 필요성과 교수자의 지도 역할이 중요함을 시사한다. 본 연구는 AI와 협업하는 창작의 주체로서 디자이너의 역할이 변모하고 있는 현 시대적 흐름을 반영한 실증 연구를 통해 디자인 전공 학습자의 생성형 AI 활용 방식을 유형화하고 그에 따른 교육적 시사점을 제공하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 본 연구 결과는 디자인 교육 현장에서 생성형 AI 도입을 고려하는 교수자에게 수업 설계 및 운영을 위한 실질적 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
As the use of generative AI increases across industries, it is required to develop design methodologies and educational methods that support its effective use in design education. This study aimed to analyze how design majors utilize generative AI tools in the design production process and their learning experiences, and to propose effective utilization methods. In the literature review, we looked into the concept and characteristics of generative AI and its current use in the field of design. Then, we designed a class that utilized generative AI tools in the design production process and evaluated the students’ usage methods and learning experience. The results of the study revealed that design majors utilized generative AI in the design production process through four distinct approaches: ‘single prompt-based generation’, ‘selective generation of graphic elements’, ‘sketch-based generation’, and ‘prompt-linked generation’. The results of the learning experience evaluation using generative AI showed that design majors had high satisfaction levels in terms of self-efficacy, learning motivation and interest, learning satisfaction, and creative thinking skills, but relatively low satisfaction levels in terms of AI utilization capabilities. Students responded that generative AI is beneficial in terms of improving the quality of their work, expanding their ideas and stimulating creativity, reducing work time and increasing efficiency, and expanding their expressive capabilities. However, it was found that the greatest difficulty in the process of writing and revising prompts. This can be interpreted I nconjunction with low satisfaction with AI utilization capabilities, suggesting the necessity of education to strengthen prompt writing skills and the importance of instructors’ guidance roles. The results of this study provide valuable foundational insights for educators who are considering the integration of generative AI into design education.
