글로벌 미디어 프랜차이즈의 이중적 ‘번역’ 전략과 지정학적 세계관의 재구성 - 애니메이션 〈나 혼자만 레벨업〉의 한일 자막 비교를 중심으로
Dual 'Translation' Strategies in Global Media Franchises and the Reconstruction of Geopolitical Worldviews : A Comparative Analysis of Korean and Japanese Subtitles in the Anime Solo Leveling

본 연구는 한국 웹툰을 원작으로 하는 일본 제작 애니메이션 〈나 혼자만 레벨업〉의 한일 자막을 비교·분석하여, 글로벌 미디어 프랜차이즈 환경에서의 ‘번역’ 전략과 문화적 재구성 양상을 규명하였다. 유튜브 댓글 텍스트 마이닝을 통해 한국어·일본어·영어 팬덤의 상충하는 기대 지평이 제작사가 단일한 영상 위에 자막과 더빙을 이원화하여 두 개의 세계관을 병존시키는 ‘전략적 분열’을 택한 주요 동인으로 작용하였음을 확인하였다. 구체적인 텍스트 분석 결과, 두 자막은 정보·문화·정치의 층위에서 상반된 전략을 취하는 것으로 나타났다. 글로벌판의 일본어 더빙과 그것의 번역인 한국어 자막은 정보의 능동적 보강, 문화적 위계의 복원, 그리고 ‘제주도’라는 실재적 장소의 소환을 통해 원작의 권위를 되찾는 ‘주권의 복원’을 수행하였다. 반면, 일본 내수판 더빙과 그것의 전사(Transcription)인 일본어 자막은 정보의 시각적 수용, 문화적 자국화, 그리고 ‘카난 섬’이라는 가상 공간 설정을 통해 정치적 리스크를 소거하고, 내수 시장에 최적화된 세계관을 재구축하였다. 본 연구는 이를 통해 각색 차원을 포괄하는 ‘번역’ 행위가 단순한 언어 치환을 넘어, 지정학적 딜레마를 관리하고 로컬 IP의 정체성을 재조립하는 문화 정치적 기제임을 규명하였다. 나아가 향후 K-콘텐츠가 서사적 균열 없이 확장되기 위해서는 기획 단계에서부터 세계적 보편성에 비추어 소재와 플롯을 발굴하고, 구체적인 IP의 확장 과정에서 원작의 갈등을 다루는 방식을 정교하게 다듬는 창조적 큐레이션이 필요함을 제언하고자 했다.
Abstract
This study examines the 'translation' strategies and aspects of cultural reconstruction within the global media franchise environment by comparing and analyzing the Korean and Japanese subtitles of the Japanese-produced anime Solo Leveling, which is based on a Korean webtoon. Text mining of YouTube comments revealed that the conflicting horizons of expectation among Korean, Japanese, and English fandoms were the driving force that compelled the production company to choose a 'strategic split,' coexisting two worldviews by dualizing subtitles and dubbing over a single video text. Subsequent textual analysis revealed that the two sets of subtitles adopted contrasting strategies across the layers of information, culture, and politics. The Japanese dubbing of the global version and its translation, the Korean subtitles, performed a 'restoration of sovereignty' to reclaim the authority of the original work through the active supplementation of information, the restoration of cultural hierarchy, and the summoning of the real place, 'Jeju Island.' On the other hand, the Japanese domestic dubbing and its transcription, the Japanese subtitles, eliminated political risks and reconstructed a worldview optimized for the domestic market through the visual acceptance of information, cultural domestication, and the setting of a fictional space called 'Kanan Island.' Through this, this study demonstrates that the act of 'translation,' which encompasses the dimension of adaptation, is a cultural-political mechanism that manages geopolitical dilemmas and reassembles the identity of local IP, going beyond simple linguistic substitution. Furthermore, this study suggests that for future K-content to expand without narrative fissures, 'creative curation' is necessary. This entails discovering themes and plots aligned with global universality from the planning stage and adopting a nuanced approach to handling conflicts within the original work during the specific IP expansion process.
