협업 기업 간 기술적 거리와 파트너 기업의 기술적 지향성이혁신 성과에 미치는 영향: 제약·바이오 산업 기반 탐색적 연구
Effects of Interfirm Technological Distance and Partner Technological Orientation on Innovation Performance : An Exploratory Study of the Pharmaceutical–Biotech Industry

제약·바이오 기업의 R&D 협업은 지식을 재조합하여 혁신을 이끌어내는 중요한 전략이다. 이러한 협업을 통해 얻을 수 있는 성과는 협업 기업 간 기술적 특성에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 파트너 기업의 기술적 지향성과 중심 기업과의 기술적 거리가 상호작용하여 협업 성과에 차별적인 영향을 미치는지를 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 2000년에서 2019년도까지의 미국 특허청(USPTO)에 등재된 글로벌 제약·바이오 기업의 공동 특허 1,718건을 추출하여 분석하였다. 혁신 성과는 공동 특허가 공개된 후 5년 이내에 다른 특허들로부터 받은 인용 횟수(전방 인용 수)를 통해 평가하였으며, 기업의 기술적 특성과 기술적 거리는 IPC 코드를 이용하여 측정하였다. 이러한 요인들이 혁신 성과에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해 3가지 모델을 통해 음이항 회귀 분석을 진행하였다. 분석 결과 첫째, 기술 깊이가 높고 넓이가 낮은 파트너와의 협업에서 높은 성과로 이어졌으나, 깊이는 낮고 넓이만 큰 파트너와의 협업에서는 성과가 낮게 나타났다. 둘째, 기술적 거리가 가까운 파트너와의 협업이 기술적 거리가 먼 파트너와의 협업에 비해 높은 성과를 보였다. 셋째, 파트너 기업의 기술적 지향성에 따라 혁신 성과 수준에 차이가 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통해 글로벌 제약·바이오 기업의 파트너 선정과 협업 전략에 대한 실무적, 이론적 시사점을 제공할 것이다.
Abstract
R&D collaboration in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors plays a vital role in driving innovation through knowledge recombination. This study examines how a partner firm's technological orientation and its technological distance from the focal firm jointly influence innovation outcomes. Using 1,718 co-patents filed by global pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms with the USPTO between 2000 and 2019, we measure innovation performance by five-year forward citations. Technological attributes and distances are derived from IPC codes, and analyzed through Negative Binomial regression models. Results show that partnerships with deep technological capabilities yield higher innovation, while collaborations with partners that are broad but shallow perform less effectively. Shorter technological distances are generally associated with better outcomes. Importantly, the effect of distance varies depending on the partner's technological profile, highlighting the need for tailored collaboration strategies. These findings offer practical and theoretical insights into partner selection in global pharmaceutical R&D alliances.
